"The Latino Muslim in America is doing a renaissance," says Khadija Rivera of Piedad, a Muslim women's organization in Tampa, Florida.

But, as VOA's Imran Siddiqui finds out, this renaissance is about more than just Koran study. The women of Piedad reach out to their community at large, regardless of religion, by showing them the true spirit Islam through acts of charity.

Some people avoid the homeless. Others react negatively towards Muslims. But in Tampa, Florida, the local Muslim community is working to improve the lives of their city's disadvantaged residents. The way these two often-misunderstood groups interact shows that perception isn't everything

But between cooking for the homeless and offering prayers at their mosque, Piedad's sisters live lives similar to other Americans. This week's Muslims' America learns that these women, while practicing Islam, are still living the American dream.

  • Piedad means piety and it's just so beautiful at any age. Hijab or the veil is a God send women are not oppressed by wearing it. It's a lovely piece of cloth that equates modesty. This video is so sweet. Thank you to the producers for showing that.

  • Mash Allah may Allah bless you sisters.

  • i love the fact that they have chosen to hire a Desi host, it shows more versatility to Islam, ( that is, if he is muslim), if he is then i think hes asking the basic questions that all male men wanted to ask the women: do u feel hot in hijab, how do people respond to it..etc.. if hes not a muslim, then hes asking the FAQs coming from outsiders, both ways ...thumbs up!

  • Yeah, I agree with the sister Jill. My collective experiences with the outside world wearing my Hijab have been more positive than negative to-and I've worn hijab and veiled my face for years.

I've noticed, also, through the years, people appear to be much more use to seeing muslim women period, besides those wearing the hijab, then when I first started covering and veiling in the mid '70s. People almost wrecked their cars for looking at muslim women walking down the street back then.

  • I honestly don't see why everyones arguing. The message in video is about peace- It's kinda lame to get on youtube to fight about your religious beliefs. Don't seek an argument- rather watch the video and express your opinions on the video. Don't log on to spread hate and anger- talk about that with your family lol Religion is basically just moral regulations to keep men under check. Relax everyone- we all have our own opinions- NO NEED TO SHOUT LOL be easy ppl

  • umm im muslim i shave my mustache and Most of the muslims wears tights

  • I think these are the questions that normally non-muslims ask. Like how can you cover up completely in this much heat... aren't you hot etc. So I guess he is trying to get the answers of frequently asked questions. This documentary is not perfect or his questions but almost nothing is perfect in this world if any.

  • Modesty is for both man and women. Many times I have seen tremendous embalance in the case of the actual dress of the The Muslim Man and Muslim Woman. Its not uncommon to see a Muslim in soccer exposing his 'aaura' (private areas) like thighs, navel, and even shaving their mustaches and beards ( which the prophet never did) while his sisters, wife, mothers are covered head to toe. Now this is in my opinion extreme in that it gives non-muslims a seemingly contradictory exterior view of islam.

  • brilliant documentary, but i don't like the presenter, hes not asking her questions hes asking leading questions. i.e. hell and hijab, aren't you hot in hijab. all questions are negative. i don't think these are his own questions
