I thought Kate Lindsay did a fine job, one of the few mezzos I can actually tolerate in fact. I didn't find the costumes to be distasteful, but the way some characters interacted (particularly in the Giulietta act), and the fact that the Muse kept appearing during the villainous plots made little sense. I thought with more rehearsal and character direction it would have been a hundred times better.

Just a stray thought: if those students in the prologue are that boisterous before they've even had one drink, just think how dangerous they'll be once they're truly soused.

@sparklyemily7 I saw this Live in HD yesterday outdoors (definitely lends something to the experience). The role of the Muse was considerably expanded and her complicity with Hoffmann's nemeses was a wonderful touch. However, I wish I could hear Garanca's song about Olympia from Act I in its entirety here. I don't hear this version too often.

Mezzo cannot sing. The tenor is far superior. "Cabaret" costumes are in bad taste.

this was amazing...I so wish PBS would sell this

@sparklyemily7 I saw it Livex in HD too, and I saw it in PBS at Great Performances the other night... I love it...

Since this "art" is dead, what does it matter? 60 years ago you could turn on your radio (or TV if you were lucky) and listen to Toscanini. Turn it on today and you might get this. Not the same at all; the culture is gone.

@AUDIOPHlLE This sort of comment destroys any hope of communication among those who want to promote any appreciation of the arts.
I saw this opera with the Live in HD, and it was absolutely amazing. I haven't been able to stop wanting to listen to it. The woman paying the muse had me captivated the entire time... It's my favorite opera now.
