The Iowa Supreme Court heard lawyers discuss the constitutionality of a law that requires marriage to be only between two people of the opposite sex. The suit contends that this is unfair to same sex couples. The hearing took place Tuesday, December 9, 2008, in Des Moines.

This clip contains the opening remarks of Polk County Assistant Attorney Roger Kuhl, speaking on behalf of the defendant, Polk County Recorder Timothy Brien.

  • 4000 years ago women were property, and polygamous marriages were common.

And the procreation argument is so weak.

Also, marriage rites were initially "friendship" rites between women.

No wonder this idiot lost the case. Not only was he arguing against equality, but he was doing it badly!

  • Word. Does not anyone study anthropology? Does not anyone understand that the "third gender" has been a part of societies since the beginning of time? Where is the knowledge? There is little knowledge, only conformity to a religious propaganda and fear of the unknown/ misunderstood. Blah. Anti-gay marriage laws will NOT last.

  • goverment cant legalize or illegalize marriage, the only heads over marriage is the church/religon you want to be married in. Therefore ask your rabbi cleric or preist to wed you

  • Why is he speaking like he's never read the brief before???

    What a moron.

  • hehe, marriage 4000 years ago was about other facts besides love...survival perhaps?
