The annual (bicycle) ride across Indiana was held on July 18, 2009.Start is around 1:15. It began at the Illinois State Line just outside of West Terre Haute, and went all the way to Richmond, IN, 160.1 miles. This video includes 1 1/2 minutes before the ride, and the first 6 1/2 minutes of the ride itself. The video was taken with a digital camera taped to the handlebars of my Trek 400 Elance (i.e. old) 12 speed Road bicycle. Unfortunately, you can mostly only see other riders from the waist down. Visible at 3:08 is a near head-on collision with another cyclist traversing the route backwards in order to get to the start point (that wasn't me that said "Idiot!" by the way. The average speed for this first part of the ride was about 23-25 mph, so it would have been a heck of crash had we hit head-on. This is vintage video; eventually, the brake cable slipped down and got in the way of the video. If anyone wants me to post more segments of the ride (brake cable and all), I documented the first hour of it, all the way to Brazil, IN, so please make comments to that effect. I finished the ride in 8 hours 28 minutes, 199th out of 1129 riders...so I'm about as good at cycling as I am at Rickrolling. I Rickroll'd the ride as the start was called, due to the vintage nature of the recording, and the fact that I didn't want to be obnoxious to my fellow riders, the Rickroll is not very loud. However, here is the breakdown, to help you "pick it out" because it is audible if you're listening for it: 1:21 instruments heard 1:38 We're no strangers to love 1:41 You know the rules and so do I 1:46 A full commitment's what I'm thinking of 1:50 You wouldn't get this from any other guy 1:53 I just want to tell you how I'm feeling 1:59 Try to make you understand 2:02 Never gonna give you up, Never gonna let you down 2:06 Never gonna run around and desert you 2:10 Never gonna make you cry Never gonna say goodbye 2:15 Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you. You can also hear me singing along for a few lines of the chorus a minute or two later. Enjoy!
A Cyclist (or car) coming at you in the correct lane is not an idiot.

@BrianWest58, point well taken. As I alluded to, it was another cyclist travelling close to me, not me, that called him an idiot. The reason he called the rider an idiot was that he showed up to the ride late going the same route as the ride itself, knowing full well that this would result in his riding into a veritable gauntlet of other cyclists. I agree that if there had been a crash resulting in injury, I don't think any court could have held him negligent, since he technically broke no law.

nice! but u should use draft a bit more... ;)

I did use quite a bit of draft a little farther into the ride. I am not a strong enough rider to go it very fast on my own for long. I was actually with one of the lead groups until about the 40 mile point, after that I found I couldn't really hang with any of the groups, so I rode mostly on my own after that. I think my problem is that when I train, I train alone, so I'm not used to drafting and it becomes psychologically tedious to me. I find the ride more enjoyable, if slower, when I'm alone.

it's kind of same with me... I train alone too... but i try to use draft as much as I can. well good luck anyway with further races =D

Thanks. Although the RAIN isn't technically a race, its the only large organized cycling type event I've ever done, and I do try to do my best. I'm set to go onto Active Duty in the Army this Summer, so depending on when I get my orders, I may or may not be able to do it.
