Marco Uccellini (ca. 1603-1680)
The famous "Aria quinta sopra la Bergamasca" (Libro terzo, Venetia 1642) in a version for two continuo instruments in C-major (original in D-major, for 2 violins and basso continuo) realized on a baroque cello (viol. 1 and / or 2) and a small theorbo in d (viol. 1 or 2, the basso ostinato and some continuo chords).
As it it a lot of work for only two people, other musicians are kindly invited to join us, creating a more soundful version for this improvisation project.

Live recital of the Duo Continuo, Heilig-Geist-Kirche Teupitz/Germany, 2008/july/26th.

THANK YOU for all HELPFUL ratings and critiques, considering, a bloody beginner with only few lessons on the theorbo presumes to mess with this masterpiece ;-))) , this is our first experiment with a camrecorder, sorry for the insufficient technical quality (and for one rough cat tune of the cello ;-)) , just an unpolished live recording.

Theorbo in d (R. Lechner 2007, corpus after Burkholtzer, metalfree strings of nylgut),
Baroque Cello (Chr. Eulenhaupt 2005, after Stradivari 1730, gut strings)

The Bergamasca from Italy (besides others, e.g. the Folia from Spain) was one of the greatest hits of the pop music (Popmusik) of the 16./17. cent. the scheme of chords of the Bergamasca is the basic prinziple of the candenza through the baroque and the classic/romantic periodes also to the serious and pop music of our days. with simple words:
Bergamasca (C-major) develops on the bass line:
||: CC | FF | GG | CC :||
In the short intro of the theorbo you should easily recognize the bass line and can follow, sing or play along the whole piece.

  • Dear Siegfried und Dorothea, thanks for the wonderful music of Baroque. Surprisingly, in the past (in antiquity), this wonderful music was accessible to all. And now this baroque with ancient musical instruments are rare.

    Thank you for the beautiful music of Baroque.
