Jana Gana Mana (Bengali: জন গণ মন, Jôno Gôno Mono) is the national anthem of India. Written in highly Sanskritized Bengali, it is the first of five stanzas of a Brahmo hymn composed and scored by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. It was first sung at the Calcutta Session of the Indian National Congress on 27 December 1911. Jana Gana Mana was officially adopted by the Constituent Assembly as the Indian national anthem on January 24, 1950.

An earlier poem by Tagore (Amar Shonar Bangla) was later selected as the national anthem of Bangladesh. A formal rendition of the national anthem takes fifty-two seconds. A shortened version consisting of the first and last lines (and taking about 20 seconds to play) is also staged occasionally.[1] Tagore wrote down the English translation of the song and along with Margaret Cousins (an expert in European music and wife of Irish poet James Cousins), set down the notation which is followed till this day.

English Translation:

Thou art the rulers of the minds of all people,

dispenser of India's destiny.

Thy name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sind, Gujarat and Maratha,

Of the Dravida and Orissa and Bengal;

It echoes in the hills of the Vindhyas and Himalayas,

mingles in the music of Yamuna and Ganga and is chanted by

the waves of the Indian Sea.

They pray for thy blessings and sing thy praise.

The saving of all people waits in thy hand,

thou dispenser of India's destiny,

Victory, victory, victory to thee.

Peace from your brothers in Pakistan. We are all one. I love my Indian friends and Pakistani friends the same, because we ARE the same.

I just read some articles which write how cruel the Caste system is may be attributed to Britain's rule in India. European countries are good at distinguishing classes of races in their colonies for the rule, like Rwanda, a good example.

I just read a little after all. I will do more research about that. Probably I had some prejudices against India before reading it.

    Like someone said months ago..

    Hinduism condones rape:

“When she has changed her clothes at the end of her menstrual period, therefore, one should approach that splendid woman and invite her to have sex. Should she refuse to consent, he should bribe her. If she still refuses, he should beat her with a stick or with his fists and overpower her, saying: ‘I take away the splendor from you with my virility and splendor.’”Brhadarankyaka Upanishad, 6.4.9,21

    now that's sick.

I love all people no matter their religion, creed, or color.

    Can you say the same?

    I doubt it.

Dravid is south, Vindh is central india, "Jaldhi tirang" are island.Initially it it was Sindh which was later decided to be sindu .Not sure if it happened but in any case it is just represents Sindi people and Sindu (Indus) river where Indian gets its name from. This national anthem in in Sanskritnised Bengali not in normal Bengali that's why it veryclose to Sanskrit. Sindhu In sanskrit and hindi and in bangali (and in most of Indian language) means Ocean which is also the name of Indus river.

Guy, FYI This national anthem contains all geographical regions of India. Sindu represents the river Indus what it is called in Sanskrit since this was written in undivided India .When it was adopted it was not removed because this is representative of Sindi community who came to India after partition.River Sindhu also flows in india in ladakh region. Also to clear UP-Bihar comes under yamuna-ganga. Himachal represent all northern hilly states including Kashmir.
