"These are strange times indeed. While they continue to command so much attention in the mainstream media, the 'battles' between old and new modes of distribution, between the pirate and the institution of copyright, seem to many of us already lost and won. We know who the victors are. Why then say any more?
Because waves of repression continue to come: lawsuits are still levied against innocent people; arrests are still made on flimsy pretexts, in order to terrify and confuse; harsh laws are still enacted against filesharing, taking their place in the gradual erosion of our privacy and the bolstering of the surveillance state. All of this is intended to destroy or delay inexorable changes in what it means to create and exchange our creations. If STEAL THIS FILM II proves at all useful in bringing new people into the leagues of those now prepared to think 'after intellectual property', think creatively about the future of distribution, production and creativity, we have achieved our main goal." http://stealthisfilm.com/Part2/

  • @JLScythe you should note that the artists can find new and creative ways of getting paid. And on the sidelines why do they need to be more richer then they are in these circumstances?

Imo artists should be more modest about their earnings. And what about the new artists? They only have a chance of getting any money is by entering a MTV "guild" of performers.

Guilds where found not viable in middle ages.

  • Piracy always hurts the artist. ALWAYS. While it might be argued that it increases publicity, it always hurts more than it helps. If you have 100 people who download an album for free, and 10 of them go buy the album, it pales in comparison to the 25 that would have bought the album had it not been available for free (had they been introduced to it some other way, say, on the radio)

(Late reply, I know, but I just dug up the notification in my mailbox...)

  • You honestly believe corporations are trying control the flow of creativity and ideas?

They don't care about that. All they care about is getting paid. And that's not always a bad thing. They need to pay the artist if they want more of their material to sell.

In this world of capitalism, the artist NEEDS to be paid for his or her work. Otherwise, he has no reason to work. Not every artist writes for the sake of communicating happiness and joy to the world, you know. Most do it to live.

  • nice work, we have the full version on our site this week!

    cheers dude :)

  • omg, an asian dude speaking in an indian accent (5:20)

    wow, that's a first...

  • Not necessarily! You see, musicians have a choice in how they wish to handle their business. Major bands get signed by record companies because the companies are a method to spreading their music further. However, with the internet and the like, we are seeing more and more independent bands these days.

And the fact remains that control of your work and profit are two things that must be decided by the artist. You have to sacrifice one to get the other.

Beyond that, I think my point holds.

  • i think its just too complex for your simple mind..

  • but the creative works are usually not controlled by the creator, they're controlled by record companies for the benefit of stockholders. musicians always get a fraction of what their work is really valued.

  • your definition of 'communication' is too narrow, we are always communicating with the world through all of our senses (and our technology).

music is a form of human knowledge, stored as data when its shared on computers. by downloading music you are exchanging information, so it is therefore a type of 'communication'. pretty simple

  • so, in closing, if you're going to take an ad-hominem attack (note that I am guilty of the same crime) aimed at filesharing, or even a straw man approach, you probably need to get educated on the real matters.
