just to clear things up, yes it is a non turboed enigne. no diesels do run good with out a turbo just depends on what engine and what ur fueling is. and no a stock cummins doesnt smoke like that, i own one and it does not. all diesel's have higher compression raito's cause of the simple fact that it needs it to create the heat it needs to run.

white smoke = coolant, you cant tell by smell, or it could be the engine is still cold, then its just unburnt atomized diesel fuel. black smoke is partically burnt

I have an 85 6.9 and no they won't smoke much at startup but just turn the pump up and it will overfuel and make cummins smoke look like my diesel lawnmower

@DrMcelroy cummins dont have vgt turbos vgt run off a boost actuator
