composed by John Dowland, 1563-1626

this setting by Ward Swingle shows why this is one of the most beautiful ballads ever written sung wonderfully by Sue Bickley and The New Swingle Singers

hearing this superb blend of voices, you can understand why this version of the Swingle Singers is my fav

from early 80s

BackRowL2R: Ward Swingle(T), Michael Dore(B), Kym Amps(S)(gotta love that flowing red hair)

FrontRowL2R: Sue Bickley(A), Carol Canning(A), Simon Grant(B), Olive Simpson(S), Philip Sheffield(T)

Come again,
sweet love doth now invite,
thy graces that refrain
to do me due delight.

To see, to hear,
to touch, to kiss,
to die with thee again
in sweetest sympathy

Come again,
that I may cease to mourn
through thy unkind disdain
now left and forlorn.

I sit, I sigh,
I weep, I faint,
I die, in deadly pain
and endless misery

  • Is Sue Bickley the same as the excellent British mezzo Susan Bickley? One of the people on the photo looks like her...

  • yes

  • Wonderful to listen to the beauty of the Swingle Singers perform "straight" (no jazz) in this great work by Dowland.

  • I nearly come in my briefs. Thank you for your subtle interpretation and understanding the nuances of the song.

Too many groups just hammer out the song. Making love is more than hammering along. Take time to embrace, to kiss, to sigh then will come the beautiful moment of petite morte..

  • @deonaka I think so, especially since there is the french proverb "the small death" meaning the orgasm

  • @deonaka There are 2 other groups - The King's Singers and Chanticleer - all three groups are phenomenal vocal groups

  • Beautiful!!!! gave me chills!!!

  • Listen and learn, Sting. Listen and learn.

  • And the unmistakable, sweet voice of Bill McGlaughlin in the background.

  • does this song really have a sexual connotation to it? the part where he says "to touch to kiss to die" ?

  • does anyone know of an acapella group that is as good or better than this group? i have such a passion for john dowlands music and no one seems to do his songs justice as does this group! thanks much for your help...whoever you are lol

  • leaves modern music for dead. Relaxing and profound. No histrionics or bullshit.

  • Beautiful.. but slow.. And I would like to hear more passion, especially in the chorus..
