This is arguably the greatest Welsh statue of a woman done in the nineteenth century.
goscombe Johns masterpiece needs help from CADW, the assembly or the national Museum.
Cardiff born Goscombe John carved this piece in London in 1891 from imported marble. The carving is highly refined showing Contrapposto which the high relief format allowed him to be more expressive with the marble. The Lady was a monument to a London born Philanthropist Walter Rice Powell. Who created some of the fine Victorian buildings in the village of LLanboidy in carmarthenshire. One of his creations was the Farmers market hall . Rice Powell became an M.P. for Carmarthenshire in the Victorian period.
The statue is believed to be owned by nobody. The Welsh assembly should link with the National Museum of Wales and house the piece. In a 'Guardianship' basis.
The Lady is deteriorating with four species of cructose Lichens covering her.
Shame the video stops so suddenly. It is a beautiful statue. I understand that in Spring 2007, CADW offered a grant of £15000 towards moving the statue into the church and conserving it to prevent further decay. The matter is currently with the Llanboidy Community Council, who have also commissioned a survey into the statue and its conservation. But it has taken a few years to get this far, and action needs to be taken urgently - something which doesn't happen here!
