Joyce's grandfather, (also James) was born in Rose Cottage so it is likely that his son John was born there too. Stan, (short for Stanislaus) was Joyce's long suffering brother.

by the way, just wondering where on the web could i find more of that audio recording of Joyce. Found it very intersting. The popular modern day consensus in Irish media (thanks david norris) is that he had a sort of posh south dublin accent...but here it seems almost more rural, even west of ireland accent. I suppose accents do change with the times. Interesting though.

Hi Angryadams,
there is a lilting quality to his accent that is usually associated with the west of Ireland. His dad was from Cork and his wife from Galway so he may have picked up their inflections. (You can hear the full recording in you google James Joyce).
Thanks for listening.
