Lyrics:
On Raglan Road of an autumn day
I saw her first and knew
That her dark hair would weave a snare
That I might one day rue
I saw the danger and I passed
Along the enchanted way
And said let grief be a fallen leaf
At the dawning of the day

On Grafton Street in November
We tripped lightly along the ledge
Of a deep ravine where can be seen
The worth of passion's pledge
The Queen of Hearts still making tarts
And I not making hay
Oh I loved too much and by such by such
Is happiness thrown away

I gave her gifts of the mind
I gave her the secret signs
Known to the artists who have known
The true gods of sound and stone
And word and tint I did not stint
I gave her poems to say
With her own name there
And her own dark hair
Like clouds over fields of May

On a quiet street where old ghosts meet
I see her walking now
Away from me so hurriedly my reason must allow
That I had loved not as I should
A creature made of clay
When the angel woos the clay
He'll lose his wings at the dawn of day

  • i dunno how true it is but i heard off a guy from dublin that its a poem about unrequited love for the poet's brother's girlfriend , who he had to look after in dublin...as the poem goes he describes her as the girl who got away.

  • @Dgow91, that fits, thanks :)

  • I first heard this while watching " in Bruges". I fits so perfectly to the scene that it gave me shivers ...

  • its about a man who fell in love with a materialistic woman. when he says he gave her gifts of the mind he means he tried to share secrets only known to the artistic breed of people like artists, poets, musicians etc.

but she is a woman who values materialistic items over these gifts. he says that she is human as he is like an angel. she is a creature made of clay and he loses his wings for falling in love with her.

  • Paddy Kavanagh really wrote this shite.

  • @jaffacakeaddict1 Whit fooking spellin mishtakes>? pipe down mah arse.. silence wench

  • @musiclover1469 No, it just proves you have a heart and soul.

  • @dereksmallsuk I see by your spelling mistakes you're a poet too. Good'lad- pipe down.

  • @Loomesy55 This song was originally written by Patrick Kavanagh for a young woman he met in Dublin- her name was Hilda Moriarty- who was training to be a doctor. Due to the age gap and her lack of interest she never returned the poem is about unrequited love and how the poet who was never really accepted was scorned again by a woman he was compelled by.

  • @musiclover1469 not at all! i have!

  • @tommylad1231 its a poem by Patrick Kavanagh
