Full version, uncut raw footage from the StareCam. This is what it's like to stare down the barrel of a pro starer's stare.
This lightning fast Quater-Final round is from the 2002 Pro-Celeb Charity World Championship. Fernandez's opponent was the famous Hollyoaks actor Darren Sanders who was thought to have won this round after a fly flew out of a hole in his jumper causing Fernandez to blink. Darren was later disqualified after it was discovered that he had actually died four minutes into the contest. Fernanadez and his Celeb partner Richard Noels from B.B.C. Radio 3 went onto the Semi's whilst Darren Sanders and Pro partner Roman Solowka crashed out.

I rescued this footage from a skip, there was no sound on it.

  • I lasted 1 min 12 secs, which is pretty good against such an opponent.I got completely overwhelmed when staring Sigmund Spasky, and my eyes started to bleed after 19 seconds. He is pure class.

  • Yeah, Spasky really does eat, drink and breathe staring.

  • I went for 2 mins 27 secs but was drained. I'm only an amateur starer, of course. I have some natural talent, but I just don't have enough spare time for technique and endurance training like the professionals. Great fun though. Fernandez is very impressive.

  • I stared for a while and then he ate my soul.

  • ive been training a bit lately and now i can last 6:26.327, its like impossible to win against his steel wall like defense and totally unpredictable counter attacks

  • Without te staring screen I am lost...well done...top drawer staring there

  • On this go I got 2:21

  • I only lasted 1:03 but I am going to beat that on my next attempt

  • I lasted the whole video. I survived by scrolling to the end when it started.

  • In my younger days I stared with Solowka and Flemming --arguably some of the best. Indeed, Fernandez, although a challenge now, wouldn't have lasted some of the 28 hour matches of my time.

  • Well,i lasted 3:12,the secret to succed is to acutally make the picture unclear to your mind.by this way its impossible to laugh.

  • When I was young and reckless, I challenged Fernandez during an Invitational Open in Stoke in 1994. Though I had reached the top of Amateur North Division I, and was touted as a wildcard choice for Team GB in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, my arrogance quickly got the better of me, and was taught a valuable lesson. I lasted 3 minutes before almost permanently losing the sight in my left eye, and was stretchered off. The humiliation was not too much bear, and have not competed since.

  • 58.5 secs, but I only play in the South Wales Sunday Conference. I'm way out of my depth here. It's just a privilege to be able to go up against a guy of this class.
