During the winter we built a toolbar for sidedressing ammonia at about 15% of the cost of a new machine and with several technology twists. We use Yetter coulters that allow running very fast (12mph was the speed here) and place them only on one side of each row. That saves weight, draft, and reduces crop damage if I'm injecting into a more mature crop with an extensive root system. In addition to RTK autosteering on the tractor, active RTK steering was also used on the planter, so the rows are in the right place even on hillsides. Therefore, with the aid of Orthman stabalizers that help keep the ammonia bar tracking perfectly behind the tractor, autosteering between the rows even on severe hillsides gives outstanding results at high speed. We added a hydraulic swinging hitch for the nurse tank that keeps it between the rows on severe hillsides. Without it, there are some fields where I couldn't have sidedressed.
