Typhoon Ondoy (international name, Ketsana) hit the country and brought heavy rains that triggered the worst flooding the Philippines' capital has seen in over four decades, submerging more than 80% of the city, affecting 2 million people.
*Southern Sumatra, Indonesia (30 September 2009)
A strong undersea earthquake, 7.6 magnitude, struck off the western coast of Sumatra island; devastating buildings and homes; death toll at 1,100 and was expected to increase further.
