The Victory record, launched in 1928 was a product of the Crystalate Gramophone Company. They were sold in Woolworth's Stores and they were a direct replacement for the Mimosa record, also a Crystalate product. Victory obviously offered better value for money, but still retained the need for a non-copyright side on each record to save costs. Generally the couplings were different types of music; most of the dance-band Victories have a non-dance coupling, though, towards the end of it's life, Victory was offering double-sided dance records, with the one side being of a tune for which the copyright was owned by Crystalate and hence they didn't need to pay the fee on that side.
The dance band recordings -- labelled by „Victory Dance Orchestra" - were mainly by genuine bands such as Jay Whidden's Music Masters, Jim Kelleher's Piccadilly Hotel Band, Pete Mandell's Rhythm Masters and an isolated side by Sid Phillips' Melodians. Many of the orchestral sides were also by George Cathie's band. Vocal items were by Cavan O'Connor, Jack Plant, Albert Whelan & Leslie Sarony, the latter two often under their own names.

  • It's from Broadcast 594 rec. July 22nd 1930

    Harry Bidgood and his Band

Just compared it with my copy.

  • @gabbysbuddy Tom Barrett on vocal (he never sang in Jack Hylton's Band)

  • @gabbysbuddy Indeed he wasn't, but Hylton's version is quite different (and on YouTube - make a search!).

  • @Emidicta I think it's Jack Hylton and Sam Browne on vocals And Rust wasn't always right!

  • @Emidicta I think it's Jack Hylton and Sam Browne on vocals

  • @Emidicta Thats quick, pretty sure of the vocalist ,not the band who are quite good.Can.t imagine how Rust,s make so many big mistakes.I promise to upload this later in the year, when i have moved house,my best records are at the back of the Garage.

  • @longpast78 Oh, really? Thanks for that info - I was just quoting Rust, so mistakes will happen. Any chance you could post the Imperial version? I'd sure love to hear it!

  • @Emidicta This record is not the British Imperal version by Wilbur,i have it and it is dynamite!

I think the vocalist hear sounds like Tom Barrett ,prob Jim Kellehers Piccadilly Band

  • 1:35 = fap fap fap

  • Actor with Dolores del Rio at 1:05 is Ralph Forbes, not "Forkes".
