Our Yorkie, Charley, has these fits all of the time. Nothing to worry about, very common in small dogs. You can help stop it if you cup your hand over their snout for a second or two (if the feisty little guy will let you), or try blowing a puff of air in their face. Sometimes these methods work, sometimes not for no rhyme or reason. Good luck :)

That is NOT a reverse sneeze that is a collapsed trachea! Very common in yorkies I have 2 of them and the condition should not be taken lightly

@DawnCraig37 its a reverse sneeze, common in small breed dogs.

@interactiveuser Mine also has been doing it since I got him..he's 10 weeks, almost 11 weeks...he's been vet checked and everything..

my 10 week old yorkshire terrier does this exact same thing..i am a new yorkie owner, so at first I was worried sick, but now to know its pretty common

It could also be a sign of congestive heart failure or, heart murmur. Get it checked early with the vet and take it seriously. Early treatment is best. It is often congenital. I have (had) three chihuahuas with this. One died pretty suddenly after having this weird cough. His brother has a heart murmur and heart valve problem. I didn't understand in time how this was related to the "reverse sneeze" or cough.

@interactiveuser the vet told us that our yorkie has pneumonia also . shes always coughing and she barely walks or eats anymore all she does is rest

he is Gagging not sneezing
Yeah, yorkies are very prone to trachea collapse. Mine did do this coughing though ever since we first got her two years ago, but it was only once in a great while, so I never really got to alarmed about it. The only sure way to see if the trachea is diseased is to have an x-ray done, or have her scoped.

This is my dog. The Vet originally said this was reverse sneezing. After about four days it started to get worse and she started coughing up clear phlegm. She had a CBC and chest x-ray done which confirmed that she actually had pneumonia. She is now on antibiotics and is doing much better.
