The scene where Kodai's parents were actually vaporized by the meteor-bomb was edited from "Starblazers"; the analogy to Hiroshima was pretty obvious too--as well as poignant the way the clung to each other in that final moment.

At 3:57 it looks like Kodai's in his uniform as he makes his way through the ruins, unless that's just another survivor. Since this is all a flashback, it could just be for dramatic effect as well.

@pbanta62 That's what I like about this show, Yamato, vs. Star Blazers. Because it's not edited. Everything Japan and some countries saw, we'll see. The pretty, the ugly, and the OMG! We get to see.

With a real emotional depth and heart to it that is missing from most modern anime, or indeed most modern anything. It's unbelievable that this series is 36 years old.

When I first saw this in 1983 as a 9 year old kid, I knew I was watching something special, and 27 years later I still know I'm watching something special!

Heh, the chocolate cake-sushi adaptation reminds me of Pokemon. In the first couple seasons, they called rice balls doughnuts, though they were properly acknowledged as rice balls later on. If Yamato were being adapted for broadcast in the US today, they would probably call it sushi because now everyone knows what it is. :)

While it is easy to comprehend Kodai's parent's being killed by a planet bomb, what are the odds that it would land right on top of them? :p
