I've been experimenting with DIY (do-it-yourself) CO2 injection systems lately. This is the second attempt and video, and it seems to be working quite well now.

CO2, or Carbon Dioxide is required by aquarium plants for growth. Keen aquarium keepers who like to grow plants incorporate systems to mix CO2 into the water. This is what this little system does.

I've been looking at a lot of DIY systems, but most are large and unsightly. I thought I'd make a mini version that dissolves about 1 bubble every 1.5 seconds.

Please feel free to comment with questions or ideas.

  • I can't find check valves at Home Depot or Home Hardware

  • try eBay or an aquarium store. They are very cheap.

  • Hey Jazzy, you dont know who i am but i wanna say i made that for my native fish tank and i works great!!! Also i watched your brine shrip hatchery set up and it works great as well. And yes this prototype is much better then the first one hehe. 5 stars! Please respond.

    Good Luck,

    Peace, Chris

  • Hey Chris ,

Just put the co2 tube in the propeller chamber it will cut up the co2 in little tiny bubbles .

I got Diy co2 running to my intake of my eheim 2211 making very tiny bubbles shooting trough my whole tank.

I tried many of these things , but i need to say that this is the best .

  • Cool comment! I like to see it when people are keen to make these things better - If you share, it will only benifit the community. Thanks for letting us know. Jazz

  • Thanks for your feedback Chris. I thought I'd leave the original design on YouTube to show people that you can try different methods and some will work better than others. Number 2 definitely worked better for me too.

  • How are you holding the sponge?

  • This is probably THE best DIY CO2 injector system I've found on youtube. I plan on building it for my own tank soon, and I can't wait to see how well it preforms. What water pump did you use, and how did you attach the reaction chamber to your pump? And how did you anchor the sponge into the reaction chamber? I know these are dumb questions but I'd like to know so I can gather all the materials together.

  • Hi, out of alot of these DIY co2 reactors ive seen yours is most practical, well explained and easy to understand. I would like to know that since you are running this in a 4 feet setup, can i run something like this in a 6' x 2' x 2' setup with a DIY yeast reactor as well ? Will it suffice ?

  • pretty sick tank.

  • Very cool idea, thanks!

  • Thanks for this video. Do you think this set up would be too intense for a ten gallon tank?

  • can you make a video of how to do>

  • that's cool. I'm planning on making my own co2 setup similiar to your design where the water enters into the co2 reactor to mix it in. I'm going to try an airstone in the reactor to get the bubbles smaller, thinking it would dissolve better.

Just wondering, does the Co2 just disperse into the reactor? or you have to have some pump or mechanism to push it in there. I'm a beginner.

  • Wow that looks great! I am a bit confused as I am not sure where the CO2 is dispersing from. Perhaps you should create a video with a complete step by step process. :)

  • nice work! im working on mine!
