  • never heard of this guy, but hes a genius and his hair is badass.

  • You don't need a degree. I thought so, and spent 3 years at university not being taught much. All you can do is to keep reading about and practising recording. The internet is stuffed with videos and articles teaching you all you need to know.

Don't worry if you don't understand everything at first. It's a lifetime learning experience. Start with the basics and work up from there!

You're lucky - recording gear is far cheaper now than it was when I was your age (10 years ago). Good luck!

  • what 57 mic is he talking about?

  • @spitfirefrench It also means you spent 20k for something you could get with a free internship. When you're done school you're so used to having all that at your disposal that you don't realize how hard it actually is to find work. And you're left with fading experience cause you have no gear at home to keep practicing on. Spend your money on gear not knowledge that is out there for free.

  • I really scored on the sm57. I didn't quite know what I was doing when I bought it. But a lot of learning and with great tips I'm really getting to know the tools of the trade.

  • You sound like Dave Grohl but still great advice!

  • @spitfirefrench Because my comment is high rated, you might have missed that it was in response to a 16 year old asking if he needed a degree to be able to record a demo to put on Myspace. Clearly the answer is no.

Recording school is all well and good, and I'm certainly not saying you can learn it all in a book, but there are way more people graduating recording school than there are bottom-of-the-ladder studio jobs out there. Internships are a safer option - if you can get one! Good luck!

  • @happyronbin clearly not all Universities are as shit as yours was... :D

It means I get to practice on a vintage Neve desk with 1073 preamps and a huge collection of outboard gear whenever I want (day or night) with either my own bookings or with highly skilled musicians that are hired in for me by the University. It means that my tutors and lecturers can also pass on their years of experience as professionals to me and others. But I'm sure all that is in a book for you to read in bed :P

  • @TreyarchIsGay The correct spelling in England is "practising." Sorry if it's different where you live. You might also be interested to learn that here we spell "patronising" with an "s" rather than a "z".

  • @happyronbin you went to a university and you still mispell practiCing

  • @theboywhocantollie

probaly. most amps are miced with a sm57. also live.

but just put a condeser mic behind it (not litterary) just for the ambient.

(srry for the english, it isn't my first language)

  • Thanks Dave Grohl! Great tips!
