and Summer Bird has to be included. The wildest family of longshots ever conceived. I wouldn't have bet on any of them according to their form on 'paper' -I guess it's in the bloodline!

I love how Grindstone, Birdstone, and Mine that Bird were all roaring closers.

It would be nice to see the Kentucky Derby run on the grass.
Do it as an experiment for one year.

I remember I thought Baffert had his first derby here for sure. Gutty effort by Grindstone. I believe Unbridled Song was the favorite. He was too close to the early pace and then moved too early.

Grindstone by a schnozz! What a great call by Davey Johnson too. Pure excitement! Can you imagine being the owner of either of those 2 horses, and you can't tell at the finish line if your horse won or lost? I'd have 3 heart attacks waiting for that photo!

That was probably one of the best races I have ever seen. When they did the replay, it really made me appreciate the skill of the jockey and the talent of the trainer. If I remember correctly, not only did Grindstone come from behind but he went from the back inside, worked his way through the crowd of bunched up horses comin around the turn so that he was actually on the outside before coming down the homestretch.
Does anyone else really miss "AND DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME?"

Grindstone's grandson, Mine That Bird, was described as a very balanced horse to ride on by, I think, Mike Smith, who rode him to a second place finish in the Preakness. And, yes breeders breed for speed first, with soundness not a consideration. A horse can earn $2 million in six starts, while a plodder can earn maybe $120,000 in 80 races. Money is more important than the long term health of the breed.
