Ryo Kawasaki/川崎燎 & his band performs "Airegin" by Sonny Rollins at NYC Birdland in 1999. Victor Jones (Ds), Tom Mackenzie (Bs) and Ray Naccari (Kb). Ryo interprets Wes Montgomery version of the theme instead of original. http://www.satellitesrecords.com/albums/press/1030.html

  • Isn't it a bit disrespectful to play wes montgomery's solo almost note for note instead of his own statement?

  • Any artist can present the song as one sees it effective to arrange the entire song, if Wes's solo is inspiring, there's nothing wrong to incorporate that as part of arrangement or composition, and it is a respectful quote for the originator of that solo. Some big bands use this method as part of arrangements. "Note by note" is misleading since it is not "note by note" and there're solo sections with his own as well. Arrangement and improvisation are both valid part of jazz idiom.
