Fine Gael's Simon Coveney wins the Cork South Central By Election in October 1998. The by election followed the death of sitting TD Hugh Coveney who was Simon's father. The Fianna Fail candidate Sinead Behan was involved in controversy during the campaign when a recording of her was accidentally played on the local RTE radio station. In it, Behan struggled to correctly answer a series of general knowledge questions.
