Dire Dawa is one of two chartered cities (astedader akabibi) in Ethiopia (the other being the capital, Addis Ababa). This chartered city is divided administratively into two woredas, the city proper and the non-urban woreda of Issa and Gurgura.

It is said that the first to settle here were the Gurguras of Somalia who named the city Dira Dhawe or Dire Dawa which means in the Somali language "the place that Dir conquered or hit with his spear".[citation needed]

Dire Dawa lies in the eastern part of the nation, on the Dechatu River, at the foot of a ring of cliffs that has been described as "somewhat like a cluster of tea-leaves in the bottom of a slop-basin."[1] With a latitude and longitude of 9°36′N 41°52′E / 9.6, 41.867Coordinates: 9°36′N 41°52′E / 9.6, 41.867, this city is the second largest in Ethiopia

Here is the problem, you have narrowed minded Somali nationalist that want to import their ethnic strife into this region and they are being used as tools by the Ethiopian government to divide and conquer. Then there are reactionary Oromos or Christian Oromos that don't want Harar Oromos to get to close to Somalis b/c of religious connection. The land is clearly Oromo land as Oromos are farmers BUT you cant say Somalis have no claim b/c they have grazed thro the land for just as long. takillah

As for Somalis who became attack dogs of Oromo, If u know your history, and your linage of Oromo race, u wouldnt unleash ur acid tounge against Oromo. Somalis are brach of Oromo race. We are them and they are us. I have seen ppl who are saying Oromo are taking our land. That is nonesene.. Oromo have more land than they need.. There are satanic forces that are creating a wedge between Oromo and Somalis.

Well, im not saying Dire dawa doesnt belong to other ethnics. It belongs to every body who was born there or likes to live there. But one thing that is undeniable is Dire is homeland for Oromos and Somalis.. As for Melikuba, Somalia is my land, Djibouti is my land, and one third of Ethiopia is my land. There is nothing you can do. I have been blessed with so many ways. Secondly, I m Muslim, very proud Muslim who wanst to put an end the christian domination of my beloved Ethiopia.

Somalis and Oromo are one people. We have the same features, Profess the same religion most of us and have the same DNA. It is very pitifull to see our people discriminating one another..
