I've only been back to Japan once, so I have about as much experience in Japan as you. I taught myself Japanese, because I wanted to read some stuff and I felt limited around my Japanese speaking friends.:) Learning kanji is a pain worse than getting hit by Ganon's warlock punch and Falcon's knee at the same time.(yes, it's a pain)=) (Especially if you don't get to use it everyday.)

Kanji is difficult even for good japanese speakers so imagine for us xD~
