  • Stahl et al (2008) points out that depression and seasonal defective disorder, along with your before mentioned conditions, can also lead to atrophy of adult hippocampal neurons. Psychotherapy (which may fall into your "stimulating enviornments" category) has also been shown to increase endogenous growth factors and the subsequent cellular generation of hippocampal neurons. It is important to note that adult neurogenesis has only been shown to occur in the hippocampus and the olfactory bulbs.

  • I just the cover story about adult neurogenesis in Science News Magazine for June 16, 2007. It states, "Exercise, estrogen, antidepressants, marijuannalike compounds, stimulating enviornments, and high social status, along with strokes and other injuries (promote neurogenesis.)" While,"Aging, stress, sleep deprivation, barren enviornments, and methylphenitate (Ritalin) damp it down."
