How to use the "triple play" technique ( little bit of magic) to factor a hard trinomial. This video is the 12th out of 16 in the Factoring series. The other three series are "Solving Equations", "Word Problems" and "Graphing".

  • Do you have a video for setting it to zero or using the zero method?

  • @katylyssiesmom2 Yes, see my video on solving quadratic equations by factoring - minkusbc

  • How about 4x^2+x-3?

what number will multiply to 12 and equals 1?

  • Must multiply to make 12 and subtract to make +1. Thus +4 and - 3 will work.

  • 5n squared+10n+20?

    nothing equals 10

    2*50

    4*25

    5*20

    10*10

  • It's not really a hard trinomial because it has a common factor of 5. Take out the 5 and you have

    5n^2 + 10n + 20 = 5(n^2 + 2n + 4). Since there are no two numbers that multiply to make 4 and add to make 2, you can go no further.

  • can you use this method to factor any trinomial?

  • this guy gets alll the bitches

  • Does this method work for (ax^2) or the (c) in the formula, or just (bx)?

  • omg thank you so much.

  • Good god, burn the textbooks, ditch the classes and sub to this guy.

  • @kps1215 Do you still need help lol?

  • My algebra 2 teacher < Minkusbc

  • Thank you so much for posting! Saved my life!

  • i have a ? on my HW that I am totally stumped on: 6y`2 - 13y - 5. I did your triple play method and it came out to:

    (6 y + 2) (6y - 15)

    ------------------------ 6

and neither side is divisible by 6!

Please help me! I'm desperate and this is literally the only ? i couldn't get using this method!!! am I doing something wrong, or do I have to do something differently to solve with - signs??

    THANKS

  • woow , i have a way that is soo much easier than this .
