Rode this race in 1987 and 1988 when I was 14 and 15. On my sea green Univega I passed dudes who were in football pads riding beach cruisers. Despite not being "technical" it beat you up something fierce. The back side straights were full of washboards. It was the most exhausting 6 minutes of my life.

Wow, I feel old. This used to be me once upon a time. There was no such word as a hard tail back then. Just a mountain bike. I came off so many times, ripped by elbows and knees, at times down to the bone. We all used to joke that if you couldn't see the bone you weren't allowed to complain. The nurse with the wire brush and peroxide tend to hurt more than the crash. A few stitches later you were good as new. I was always more worried about my bike though.... Ahhhh....the good ol days

You were racing in this championship?

The Kamikaze was crazy, crazy fast but not really technical I recall some high speed cornering too. . Yeah, suspension sure helps, but not so much on that descent.
Back then, there were tons of racers and timing them took all day. There aren't as many races or racers now... Bikes sure are lighter though..

Now this is the real deal!

All mtbiker must be pleased with these boys, because without then, today the freeride couldn't exist.

@TheMCflint I think that was a Tioga disc drive wheel. I always wanted one of those and a drop bars like John Tomac
