If you had to choose between being the aggressor or the victim, which would you choose? For refugees of the civil war in El Salvador, fueled by the Reagan administration, it was an easy choice. Founded by two pre-teens in the ganglands of 1980 Los Angeles, the Mara Salvatrucha - aka MS-13 - grew into the largest and most violent street gang in the world. This is a graphic, tightly-paced documentary about the role of violence, trauma, and misguided government policies in fostering a dangerous international movement. Revealing interviews with current and former MS-13 members detail the hopelessness that drives boys to take on the anti-establishment ideology of the gang today. The US has poured money into deporting, incarcerating and killing gang members, yet the MS-13 continues to grow. Alexandre Fuchs does not present an easy solution, instead he mirrors the difficulties governments face in creating real opportunities for a generation raised on war.

soy salvadoreño y vivo la zozobra de las maras. los mareros no son tan inocentes como los pintan, casi heroes. ellos no sufrieron la guerra pues apenas son adolescentes y la guerra terminó en el 92; tampoco son ex combatientes. ahora que los más viejos dejan la vida loca andan reclutando jovenes a la fuerza, amenazadolos con la muerte si no se unen a la pandilla ¿dónde está el maltrato y el sufrimiento? tengo vecinos que se hicieron mareros y no llenan el perfil del video ¿y entonces?

Yes they suck but these maras are the gift the USA gave El Salvador for stuffing up their economy, stealig their resources and promoting the war in the 80s. What did anyone expect?
