Beasley Allen attorney Kendall Dunson, who practices in the firm's product liability and personal injury section, discusses a tragic school bus accident that occurred in Huntsville, Ala., in November 2006. Beasley Allen represented the family of a high school senior who was killed along with three other students when the bus plunged off an overpass after colliding with another vehicle. Kendall talks with show host Gibson Vance about how lawyers and investigators determine what happened in a crash situation by analyzing evidence at the crash scene. He and Gibson show videos that reconstruct the circumstances of the accident. Kendall also shares that the investigation uncovered the bus driver had an extensive criminal record, and should not have been employed as a school bus driver. The investigation also revealed the bus driver fell or jumped from the bus during the crash. As a result, he would have been unable to help steer the bus to safety after the crash impact. As a result of this case, the bus company's contract with the City of Huntsville was terminated. This crash also ultimately brought state leaders into a discussion about whether or not seat belts should be mandatory for all passengers on school buses.
