You have a point, though Carmen of Merimee is quite a nasty character, Bizet made her better. But yes, you make good points. Carmen isn't cheap. At any rate, this is director's choice, and considering the productions we have today, this one is pretty good even if one doesn't agree with every detail.

I agree with MrZeitun's comment above. Carmen as how Bizet envisioned it, is NOT cheap. To depict her as a cheap whore is just plain WRONG. She's singing the Habenera, a song about love. Cheap whores do NOT care or know anything about love. Carmen is passionate, sensual, sexy, fun-loving, strong and vibrant, and full of life, basically every man's fantasy and that's why Jose was so easy to fall in love with her. (Cont.)

I think much of the movements is the director's choice rather than the singer's. I saw this same production but with Christine Rice as Carmen in the movies and most of the elements were the same. Also, here is Rinat Shaham singing in the same production it's the same staging /watch?v=-1oo0exbGRE. Personally I like it and I think Carmen is a bit of a whore (what do you think she is doing with the border guards when she is helping smugglers?) but it's the matter of personal taste.

I think someone here who said she was a wardrobe mistress for singers said that the ribbons on these corsets that they use in opera are more elastic than usual so they can expand. Also, I read one singer said that she always inhales when they tighten it so that she has room. Some singers actually like it when they have to were corsets because it give them extra support. At any rate, opera singers are amazing especially the great ones...
