Appenzeller Mountain Dog (mix) Bandit will help me to show that it is very well possible to train your dog without using treats or other rewards for showing behaviour we would like to reinforce.

Bandit only did puppy class (fall of 2003 - at a very old fashioned dog school where they hang your dog on his skid chain when he refuses to do what you want) and after a few other dog schools where they did not know how to handle him and where he even was called crazy, we attended a rehab programm (which we did not finish but thats a different story).

Basic obedience, as is taught on regular dog schools, is something Bandit didn't learn (yet). Even though he is able to function pretty good.

We started doing circle training after a discussion on Facebook, where I saw some films of Emily Larlham (Seminar Hondenschool De Laar 27/28 th. August 2011) using very much treats in barrier training (circle training inside out). I think it is possible to teach your dog circle training and barrier training (and other disciplines) without using treats as a reward and so I came to the challenge of starting this training with Bandit.

For both of us, circle training is completely new. We do it just our way, so if you are a professional dog trainer who teaches circle training, please remember that I am just an amateur at this. The goal of these series of films is not to teach circle training, it is just to show that dog training without treats is possible and can lead to a happy dog as well as training with treats.

I hope you enjoy this film and the ones that are coming up and I hope you would like to follow us in our new adventure! See you!

NB: Please take notice of the several pick order undermining actions Bandit shows throughout this film. He knows what I expect from him, but he just doesn't always like to do it my way ;-) Ah well, he's Bandit, my manipulative dominant Bandit. He's MY BOY!
