Before creating his beloved courtroom drama Rumpole of the Bailey, John Mortimer wrote of the difficult but enduring love between father and son. Inspired by his own life, filmed largely on location at his family estate in Oxfordshire, this hilarious and heartbreaking production won multiple awards including an International Emmy® for best drama. Sir Laurence Olivier, Alan Bates, and Jane Asher star. Seen on US television in the early 1980s. Available for purchase at http://www.acornonline.com!
How did the father go blind?

I read the book on Mortimer by Graham Lord, and a real devestating one it is too, but if you ignore the bitter and snide asides Lord makes, because of the fact that Mortimer turned against him mid way through its writing, there are interesting facts. He says that Oliver plays Clifford Mortimer like a lovable curmudgeon wthout any trace of his anger and physically violent nature, but thats not true at all. I feel voyage round my father to have an undeniable, even raw, emotional truth to it.
