Documentary covering Fukushima, Chernobyl, and alternative nuclear power generation including Thorium. BBC Horizon.

Broadcast 14 september 2011
Length 57 minutes 25 seconds

Six months after the explosions at the Fukushima nuclear plant and the release of radiation there, Professor Jim Al-Khalili sets out to discover whether nuclear power is safe.
He begins in Japan, where he meets some of the tens of thousands of people who have been evacuated from the exclusion zone. He travels to an abandoned village just outside the zone to witness a nuclear clean-up operation.

Jim draws on the latest scientific findings from Japan and from the previous explosion at Chernobyl to understand how dangerous the release of radiation is likely to be and what that means for our trust in nuclear power.

  • @canadianmerchant you sir have been sweeped away into the media hype. okay yes it was a terrible event but to compare this to Chernobyl is laughable. this is not even close

i seriously suggest you research Chernobyl, the before, during and after. then when you have read, examined and thought thoroughly about then come back and repeat your words. i seriously doubt you will be able to whats sad about Fukushima is during the event, the media really only focused on the plants not the people in need

  • soo sad that they didn't talk about the genetic problem that afflict Chernobyl Victims!! What's about all the born-dead children afflicted by genetic mutation? what's about all the people born with mutations? what's about all the children that still born with genetic mutation? definetly a propaganda documentary!

  • If you didn't watch the entire film then your opinion is pointless.

  • This is clearly a propaganda video.

  • @dcs002 were you on the scene at the time? Where do you source your information? If its second had I dont think what you comment can be taken any more seriously than a post from people you would class as conspiracy theory. There is 3 sides to this story. The official story. The unoffcial story by the CT camp. And then there is the truth. From a common sense perspective you could not expect total transperency from the japanese goverment, or any goverment in this situation. To much is at stake!

  • No mater how much energy can be produced by this means if there is any chance... And I mean ANY chance of something going wrong its so not worth the risk to man kind. This shit can remain toxic for 250,000 years!!! Experts can talk all day long and spit out as many facts as they like as to how safe it is but common sense will tell you Nuclear power is a bad idea!

  • Events like this WILL happen. We must learn from these disasters so that we are better prepared for when the next one will occur. This is what makes our species so hardy.

  • love BBC, but this presenter is a fucking plonker, so 7 minutes for me is enuff
