In the highlands of Bolivia, a combination of climate change and falling further and further behind the rest of the country in terms of technology and quality of life is causing people all over rural areas to abandon their homes and move to the cities. With no education, very few possessions, and no plan for how they will survive they often resort to exhausting work as a street vendor or beggar. Energetica is a Bolivian NGO that has installed photovoltaic-powered pumps so the people in these areas can have water from the aquifer in the dry season, electricity, radio, lights, and in some cases television and computers. Now more are choosing to continue life as llama and alpaca shepherds, living like they have been for hundreds of years, but with a few modern amenities.
