From a 1920's union song in the North of England, to a favorite of various underground movements, to being used by (or in support of) the Provos, to the Reagan/Bush I era of paranoia, to the recently completed reign of Bush II, this little piece keeps coming back and stays useful. I've heard a dozen people modestly claim credit (for themselves or their family or whoever) as author. I used to assume Tommy wrote it, it's that good.

As far as I know , this song was wriiten by Colum Sands , one of the Sands family from near Newry, and is about the Troubles in general not just or particulalry the IRA.
