@gmren14 It's on Page 182 and 183 of his book "Mud In Your Eye" ---actually published in 1973: "There can be no doubt that there exists in France probably as much talent as in all other rugby countries combined... French rugby, despite its organisational eccentricities, is extremely strong and gains strength all the time."
His comments are not controversial, and are repeated by anyone who has any knowledge of the game in France.

@Jack72824 I'm hesitant about that claim from Chris Laidlaw back in 1971. I'm not saying he didn't say what he said but I'd like to see the context in which it was said. In any case, you're right, when it comes to 15 vs 15 on the pitch nothing else matters, as France showed us that Sunday, in 1999 and 2007 and as New Zealand demonstrated in 1987 and now also.

@gmren14 It's not to be "blind to what NZ represents", it's just acknowledging a fact. France's extraordinary level of talent has long been recognized by every authority on the game---including in New Zealand. All Black halfback Chris Laidlaw suggested as long ago as 1971 that France has 20 world-class players for every one that New Zealand has.
Of course, all that means nothing when it comes to 15 versus 15 on the football field. Or 15 versus 16, as we all witnessed last Sunday night.
-
@Jack72824 And by the way, France may have talent, may have been 3 times runner-ups but to say they have more talent than every other nation COMBINED is to be blind to what NZ represents in rugby.
-
@Jack72824 On the other hand, New Zealand may be two-time world champion, but they have win 10 times the Tri Nations (in 16 years), Grand Slam champions 4 times defeating all four home nations during one tour, won over 75% of all rugby matches the've ever played since 1903, named team of the year 5 times, gave the first rugby superstar (Jonah Lomu) and held the top ranking in the world longer than all the other countries combined. What do they have in common? The fear and respect they cause.
-
@Jack72824 If I'm smoking something then you must be snorting something 'cause if France is the equivalent of Brazil in rugby, then what is New Zealand?? Let's begin. Brazil, in soccer (or football whatever you want to call it) has 5 world cups, 3 confederation cups and 8 Copas Américas giving us a total of = 16 international tournaments making it the most successful team in the world, not to mention the silver medal on the Olympics and the number of players they have given.
-
@gmren14 "The bogey team of the powerful ones"? What are you smoking? France is the rugby equivalent of Brazil. It has more rugby talent than every other nation combined.

@lbailey91 Some of them were wearing blue t-shirts, others white t-shirts and the rest wore red t's. It represented the French flag. It was to show that they weren't impressed by the biggest rugby team of the world and that they would fight. I was so proud !! :D
