On Indra's recommendation, Rama decides to propriate Ma Durga. He requests Hanuman to go off to Gandharvamadhan parvat to fetch 1000 lotuses to be offered. The vanaras and Lakshman make appropriate preparations, and then Rama starts the puja, reciting Chandi-paTh and singing Durga stuti.

After Hanuman returns with the flowers, Rama prepares to offer them, when he notices one flower missing. In order to make up the shortfall, he prepares to offer his eye. But just as he is about to, Ma Durga appears before him and blesses him.

Note: this is the main story behind Durga puja, and why it is held at the time co-inciding with Dushera.

  • yes @Vrishasena, you are absolutely right, it was 1000 in the book.

Jai maa Durga or Maa Parvati

    Jai Shiva Shaker

Jai Sri Sita Raam Jai Hanumaan

But, I love you Lord Krishna.

  • @snehilsharma2008 No, I was wrong, it was 108 only!!! The terms used were 'astottaro-shato' ( or asto-uttaro-shato; asto=8, uttar=after & shato=100, so it means 108) & 'shatasta'(or shato+asta, means 100+8=108). Thanks to Semanti for this info!

  • its not 1000 lotuses...its 108...

  • @cybersahon

I checked out Krittivas - if that's the version you're going by, then 1000 is correct.

The 108 number must be from some other source

  • @snehilsharma2008 same text says that 32 mahanaam of maa Durga,

108 well known names, and 1008 up naam.

if this is then her forms mismatch her names. Even Guru Shankracharya stated this. actually 1008 names is the total sum of 51 goddesses at Shakti peeths. Jai mata ki

i am 8 in ashta bhawani

i am 9 in nava durga

i am 10 in maha vidyas

i have 51 partial expansions in the form of 51 shakti peethas.

  • @snehilsharma2008 dear yes actually you are right these names can be Mataji's form but why these names are given are not due to her different forms, e.g. Dakshayagyavinashini is one of 108 names of mataji, which was was due to story of Goddess Sati now tell me. Daksha yagya vinashini is form of mataji. See Devi Bhagwata Purana says, while explaining Devi Gita to Raja Himachal, Maa Parvati states

  • @snehilsharma2008 different scriptures have different opinions. If you actually sat beside the priest invoking the mantras DURING the offering of the lotuses, you'd see why. And do actually read the chandi - note that there are no distinction between names and forms.

  • @cybersahon dear she did not took 108 names but Maa Shakti or Maa Parvati has 108 names as per Durga Saptashati and 1008 in lalita sahsranaam. Durga only took the fom of Goddess Chadi to slay Mahishasura. and Maa Parvati too 10 nine forms to destroy Shumbha and Nishumba with their commanders.

  • @indinoodle

Durga puja used to be celebrated in spring, but Krittivas wrote his translation of the epic, it started coinciding w/ Dushshera. But you're right - Durga is known all over, but celebrated w/ other names, like Chandi. The Navratri puja in the North is somewhat different from the Durga puja celebrations in Bengal

  • @mileycat92 its not like tht. All hindus worship durga. for all hindus ramayan is sacred. i think this trend of following ram's durga puja was started by a bengali king. but its not tht durga's story is only known in bengal. it is in the puranas and thus is known by every hindu. only celebrated in bengal. just like all hindus know of vishnu's vamana avataar but it is celebrated only in south as onam. some king again must hv decided to do so there i guess. hope ur clear.

  • ram was also bengali?? he did durga puja :P
