Irisée dances "Ya Mustapha" at Africa Fest.

The wonderful bellydancer Irisee shares the stage with Salaam Shalom at Madison's Africa Fest as the tune Ya Mustafa gets a Bollywood makeover.

Ya Mustafa, is a famous Egyptian song of unclear origin. Our version is sung in Arabic and French. The music of the song is similar to Greek music. The song has been performed in many different versions by many different singers worldwide. This song, with its Greek style music and polyglot lyrics, can be considered as a historical tribute to the cosmopolitan era in the Egyptian city of Alexandria. During that era, a large cosmopolitan polyglot community, mainly Greeks, Jews and Italians, lived in Alexandria. A sizable portion lived in the Attarine district, where the events of the song take place.
The refrain of the song in English is Darling, I love you, darling, I adore you, like tomato sauce. I should say that Tomato in Italian translates as Love Apples because tomatoes were thought to be an aphrodisiac.
