Gene used to tell the story of the night this was recorded. After dozens of takes, they couldn't get the mood just right, and Gene was getting hoarse and tired. Agreeing to do one more take before going home at 3AM, Gene's tiredness and the strain in his voice were just right for the way the producers wanted to present this song. Success!! (The music kinda reminds me of the old Perry Mason theme music)
