Blessed Pope Pius IX was born Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti and was the longest reigning pope in Church history after St Peter, 1846 to 1878. His reign saw the unification of Italy, the fall of the Papal States and occupation of Rome, the First Vatican Council in 1869, which decreed papal infallibility and the definition of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. His is also famous for his "Syllabus of Errors" which condemned the liberal trends of the modern world.

I learned that I am a relative of Pope Pius IX, who was born Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti. My maternal grandmother was from the Feretti family in Italy. His kind look reminds me of my grandmother, and her kind nature. We were blessed to have him as a Pope.

The Pope defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, meaning that Mary was conceived without original sin. Pius IX was also the last Pope to rule as the Sovereign of the Papal States, which fell completely to Italian nationalist armies by 1870 and were incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy. He was beatified in 2000.

What a truely inspiring and holy man of virtue... One of the greatest Popes that have occupied the throne of Peter. His actions, policies and personality serve as a shining example of Christianity in this wicked world that is desintergrating into chaos.
