  • @josvanr My guess would be it's his pet-name for that mass block-in technique . "Mud" in artist speak is usaully slang for when the paint gets out of control and you're left with a smeared mess. If meant facetiously, "mud head" would be an appropriate name for the technique seen here because it's really hard (at least for me) to start that broad and loose with the paint without losing the underlying form of what you're trying to paint (probably why he begins with a firm drawing).

    I'm simply utterly baffled as to why one would ever need a palette that enormous for a mid-sized painting.
