In the past three generations, increasing numbers of Americans have been prescribed antidepressants. In many cases, such prescriptions are the only mental health care the patients receive.
One cause of the rise in antidepressant use is that many doctors conflate conventional sadness—as from the loss of a loved one or a life-changing event such as a divorce—with the more serious and life-quashing condition of clinical depression.
A second contributing factor, the author argues, is a change in the standard diagnostic guide, which caused many milder mental ailments to fall under the seemingly neutral label of disorder.
I am thinking of the Medicated Americans, those 11 percent of women and 5 percent of men who are taking antidepressants.
The number of Americans using antidepressants has skyrocketed in the last decade, the Washington Post reported Dec. 3.
According to the Health United States 2004 report, issued by the National Center for Health Statistics, the use of antidepressant drugs such as Prozac, Paxil, or Zoloft, has nearly tripled among all American adults.

Among women, one in 10 now take an antidepressant drug. The number of children using antidepressants also has tripled since the 1994-96 study period.

The report also revealed that prescription drug costs are increasing faster than any other area of medical care as more Americans take drugs for a wide range of reasons. According to the report, the cost for healthcare in 2002 climbed to $1.6 trillion. Of that figure, prescription drugs accounted for $162 billion.

About half of all Americans take at least one prescription drug, the study found.

just because a doctor prescribes something does not mean it is for your benefit. PEOPLE.... please stop taking all these poisons!!!! Find alternative therapy... yoga, meditate, herbal teas, message.... tap into yourself, for there is where the answers lay... not in the bottle of pills!!!!

The diagnosing of depression by medical doctors is haphazard in that they work in conjunction with big pharmacutical companies. The dollar is the bottom line, the sufferer is a means for profit.

After my wife & I were questioned by the CIA for upholding the US Constitution & demanding justice, we were stopped on a Vermont highway, 1,200 miles from home, by the CIA (AGAIN!) while on vacation, a veiled threat.

Since then, my wife has left me out of fear, a daughter has left the country, another daughter has lost her home & her husband is in prison on fake charges.

A black government Chevy Suburban watches my house & I lost my engineering job of 16 years.
