The Domestic Violence Unit ("DVU") is a grant funded unit for the Cameron County District Attorney's Office. The purpose of this unit is to advocate and prosecute crimes on behalf of victims of abuse. Domestic violence affects not only those abused, but witnesses, family members, co-workers, friends, and the community at large. Children who witness domestic violence are victims them selves and growing up amidst violence predisposes them to a multitude of social and physical problems. Constant exposure to violence in the home and abusive role models teaches the children within the home that violence is a normal way of life and places them at risk of becoming society's next generation of victims and abusers.
This year will be the 5th Annual Victory Over Violence 5K Run!Walk to raise proceeds to help our local Cameron County domestic violence shelters, "The Family Crisis Center" and "The Friendship of Women."
On April 9, 2011, the Domestic Violence Unit, on behalf of the Cameron County District Attorney's Office, will kick of this great event at 8 a.m. at Louie's Backyard. The Victory Over Violence 5K Run/Walk is a 3.1 mile march to stomp out violence in support of the plight of these victims. Supporters are in vited to bring bikes, pets, or baby strollers and join us on the route.
We understand that there are many demands on you resources, but we hope that you will, as we have, see the importance of this cause. We hope to build on last years foundation to continue to make this an annually anticipated event. Thank you in advance for your generous support and we hope to see you there!
