LAW: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/07-08/bill/sen/sb_0701-0750/sb_731_bill_2008082...

Question: Hey Massage Nerd! I am in California and am 300 hours away from obtaining my HHP license. My question to you is: From one massage nerd to the other, how do you feel about the new law going into effect for California in 2010? If you don't know what I'm talking about, here are some news links: http://www.californiaprogressreport.com/2008/12/new_state_law_b_1.html http://diamondlight.net/news/2008/10/23/new-law-for-massage-therapists-in-cal... . Thanks so much! By the way, I LOVE the site and am also one of your YouTube subscribers. :)-Crystal

Like you said, it doesn't specify (as far as I've found) how much the license fees will be, or how many CEUs will be required. (Although I have heard the fee's will range between $200 - $400.)

Thanks again for your valued opinion, I appreciate it. I'm going to give the bill I printed another going over and see if I can find anything new.

Even though this new bill will go into effect soon, I am wary. True, it will be better for people who practice massage to be 18+ and have 500+ hours under their belt and have to of passed their national exam, but there are so many gray areas. (Better for us, too. So many people think of being a massage therapist as an easy, cush, or sexual job.)

  • Hey Massage Nerd, this is Crystal. Thanks so much for the YouTube response. (So quick, too!)

My instructors at my massage therapy program are so excited about this new bill, but I wanted someone else's opinion. One instructor in particular thinks it's going to solve a LOT of the "sensual/sexual massage" problems we have here. (Especially on Craig's List, ew.)

  • Good to have educational requirements, but too much big brother. Usually bigger government is more expensive, but those of us who work in several locations or move, will hopefully benefit by not having to get licensed in different cities. ABMP was good at trying to get useful language, but other org's seem to want power and $. Also having a CA license sounds good worldwide- hopefully will get reciprocity.
