An old video I made of a Philips 212 turntable, which was modified by its previous owner to add 78 RPM speed and use multicolor LEDs instead of the original incandescent indicator bulbs. I have since sold this turntable, and unfortunately I did not keep any of the documentation on the 78 RPM mod. But nonetheless, this was a quick tour of its features and demonstration of its performance, using a Stanton 500 series cartridge.

  • Did you sell the turntable?

  • @6452ss Yes.

  • That is one seriously classy looking and sounding turntable.

I plan to see if I can find that LP record. If you recall and if I may ask, what was the object behind the pipe as it ran along behind your stereo receiver?

  • @uxwbill That Stanton cartridge actually sounded very dull and muffled, even with a brand new stylus. It probably had been used for many hours and was simply worn out. Nonetheless, the Philips was built like a tank and would probably sound fine with a new cartridge, but I wanted to upgrade to a newer turntable.

The mystery object was the remains of a Radio Shack "Science Fair" 130-in-1 project kit, which has had most of its components gutted.

  • Really nice motor start and stop. The buttons are faintly familiar but I don't believe I've seen that turntable. I like the downforce adjustment too, just makes so much sense. I'm putting on my list to look out for.

  • Very nice turntable. I used to have one up till the motor failed and I bought an SL1200.

The 212 sound quality is easily on par with the technics, and maybe more natural too. I still miss it - it's a very nice instrument with a beautiful design.

  • My parents have that same model (sans modification) of turntable. I always loved the capacitive speed selector switches. When I was young they seemed high tech.

  • Does this have the PE slide in cartridge mount, or is it more like Dual?

  • Nice! My grandmother had a Philips 212 too, and I was fascinated by those buttons, you barely had to touch. Cool LED mod btw :)

  • i didn't know 78s were that big
