Because cars do stupid things, like crash into each other, trucks go on fire etc etc. The channel tunnel train can be organised and operated in a safe manner.

For accidents in tunnels see the "Mon Blanc Tunnel" accident and look at the chaos that caused.

@pennylane36 simple!have you ever driven behind a drunk,drugged up,angry,sleepy or driver? trust me,i work on these trains most people cant even drive 400m in a STRAIGHT LINE let alone 50km...

@pennylane36 driving 'through' a tunnel isn't as fun as you'd think. Try the 25 km Gotthard tunnel in Switserland. You go nuts after a while. Just for that reason, people are made to drive slow and have quite some distance in between.

Also, more individuals mean more chances of mistakes and accidents. Things you don't want inside a tunnel.

I know, I would also have liked to drive it myself. But in the end, it's just a bad idea.
