National student rugby league champions Leeds Met Carnegie continue to chase their Carnegie Challenge Cup dream after a hard-fought victory against Scottish champions Edinburgh Eagles.

The Leeds Metropolitan University side overcame their Scottish opposition 20-6 in a match heavily affected by the muddy conditions.

Leeds scored after only three minutes with a well worked move, however Edinburgh fought back immediately with a score of their own to take a 6-4 lead. In a tight and physical encounter Leeds Met Carnegie reached half time with a 10-6 advantage.

In the second half the students were contained until, with thirteen minutes left, a moment of individual brilliance saw Jack Simpson tear through a tiring Eagles defence for a fine try. A tense final ten minutes saw both sides give it everything, but in the end Leeds Met Carnegie's defence held firm. Leeds Met sealed the win with a score under the posts with only minutes remaining to make it 20-6 and book their place in round three of the Carnegie Challenge Cup.

The win means that the students are in the third round of the competition for the second successive year and builds on their impressive second round 36-6 victory over Warrington Wizards.

Following their narrow 18-16 win over the RAF in round one, the Eagles had made the long trip to Yorkshire hopeful of continuing their good form in the competition but in the end came away with nothing.

Leeds Met try scorer Jack Simpson was delighted with the victory, "The boys put in a really good performance over the eighty minutes today and we are delighted to be in the third round draw. It wasn't easy to play rugby in these conditions and Edinburgh made it very difficult for us, but I'm really glad we've come away with a win."

The game took place at the Milford Marlins ground due to a frozen pitch at the University's Headingley Campus.

The third round draw will take place live on BBC Radio Manchester on Tuesday 17 February at 7.15pm.

Leeds Met try scorers: Charles Parton, Rees Griffiths, Jack Simpson, Iain Gordon
