Pakistani television shows emergency services racing to the scene of an attack on a mosque near military headquarters in Rawalpindi.

Shortly before 1100 GMT, emergency crews were saying at least 39 people have been killed and 35 more wounded.

The alarm was raised when shooting and explosions were heard after Friday prayers.

Details about what happened were not immediately clear.

The latest violence comes after U.S. President Barack Obama urged Pakistan to crack down harder on militants along its border with Afghanistan.

Pakistani forces also carried out a major offensive against Taliban insurgents in South Waziristan in October.

The militants responded with a wave of bombings which have killed several hundred since then.

Who is behind the latest violence is not yet known.
