Pilot performing the catchy tune 'canada' on top of the pops, 1976. Original sound.

The Canadians have to play this at the Olympics!

p.s I've tried to patch together the video as best I could (hence brief cuts in sound/picture)

For an 'unbroken' one search knightrats - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gYCxqoUGYY

A look out California
Ooo-ooo, I gotta warn ya
Here comes Canada

Canada, you got an open door
You got so many things
I swear, I never saw them before
So much more, you got a world in store
You got a home from home, got a hold so strong
Can't seem to ignore

These things I do
I do for nobody else but me

A look out California
Ooo-ooo, I gotta warn ya
Here comes Canada

Canada, you proved your worth
You got snow peaked mountains tumbling down
You had them from birth
Say it clear, so the world can hear
I swear I never left you
Without shedding a tear

These things I do
I do for nobody else but me

A look out California
Ooo-ooo, I gotta warn ya
Here comes Canada

These things I do
I do for nobody else but me

A look out California
Ooo-ooo, I gotta warn ya
Here comes Canada ....

  • The edition of Top of the Pops this comes from (24 June 1976) was shown on BBC4 on Thursday and is on the BBC iplayer for the next week or so. If you're quick you'll catch it!

I cannot believe this wasn't a hit. The lyrics are a bit trite but the tune, the harmonies, the guitar solo are all first class. Was going first on ToTP cursed? A lot of the bands I've seen opening the show in 1976 flopped.

  • @reddrobbo Yeh i watched it, was really hoping to see a clip of Pilot, but none whatsoever. Bay City Rollers got a mention though

  • Thanx for these rarities Nigel. I see Paton plays rhythm guitar and wonder who's the extra member playing bass. Although I think they were in playback here.

  • @urbania70

No problem mate. Nice to see you've been on a bit of a Pilot marathon :P Years ago when pilotpotty had this video up the bass player actually commented on the video stating that was him in the video and how he helped on morin heights. He also said they did a performence like this but with the track 'running water', written by Ian

  • @nigelo92 Do you mean PilotPotty himself plays the bass here?

  • @urbania70

Nah, she posted all PILOT clips before me, but her account has been closed for whatever reason

  • And they became the Alan Parsons Project - how great is that! I always loved them!!!

  • This song is massively underated! it should get more recognition than it does.

  • @reddrobbo After watching TOTPs I looked up my Guinness Book of British Hit Singles and was amazed to find that this excellent song never even charted in the UK! I wonder if Iain Bairnson lent David Paton his Les Paul here and also, if so ,was this the guitar that Iain used to record his solo on Kate Bush's 'Wuthering Heights' ?

  • I love the double neck guitar, cool!

  • Uma canção que faz retroceder ao tempo, infancia que tinhamos na vêia um filing musical de otimo gosto, realmente uma banda espetacular...

  • Muito boa me lembro bem, tocava muito na Radio Excelsior final dos anos 70.
